Leonard “Len” Lechtner passed away peacefully on April 7, 2026, just days before his 94th birthday. He was born on April 13,1932, in Erie, PA, where he was raised and built the foundation of a life defined by dedication, leadership, and warmth.
Len attended Academy High School, where he was active on the tennis team and served as a cheerleader—an early reflection of his spirited personality and enthusiasm for life. He went on to serve his country as a First Lieutenant in the Military Police at Fort Knox in Louisville, KY. It was there that he met the love of his life, Helene, beginning a devoted marriage that would span 71 years.
After his military service, Len studied business at Gannon College in Erie. He carried his strong work ethic and positive attitude into along and successful career, contributing to companies including Waste Management, BFI and as a business owner of Union Iron & Metal and Tol Envirotech. Len worked well beyond traditional retirement, investing in Castle Beer and worked alongside his son, Larry.
A deeply committed member of Brith Sholom in Erie, Len devoted much of his life to his congregation and community. He held numerous leadership roles and was honored for his contributions to both the synagogue and the Jewish Community Council. Among his many accomplishments, he played a key role in the successful merger of the Brith Sholom Congregation-Jewish Center property with the Jefferson Educational Society.
After he retired, Len found a new passion for life in Boca Raton, FL. An avid tennis player, he played well into his 90s and formed lasting friendships in his Century Village community. He served on the Century Village Tennis Club board for many years and was involved in planning many of their events. In recognition of his dedication and contributions, the Len Lechtner Hall of Fame Cup was dedicated in his honor.
Above all, Len cherished his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Helene; his son, Larry Lechtner; his daughter, Sheri (Marc) Freedman; his granddaughter, Hallie (Vlad) Bulkin; his grandson, Max (Jackie) Freedman; his great-granddaughters, Lily and Mia; his brother-in-law, Elliot (Emily) Steinberg; as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 10, 2026,at South Florida Jewish Cemetery, 6081 S. Congress Avenue, Lake Worth, FL.

Len will be remembered for his enthusiasm for life,unwavering dedication to family and community, and the kindness and positivity he brought to all who knew him.
